About Saint Paul

Saint Paul is situated in the southeastern part of Minnesota. It lies along an S-shaped bend in the Mississippi River and borders Minneapolis on its west side. The region that would become Saint Paul was originally inhabited by Sioux and Ojibwa groups.

In 1805, Lieutenant Zebulon Montgomery Pike, the leader of an American expedition made a treaty with the Sioux for possession of the area. The settlement’s first land claim was made by a tavern owner named Pierre “Pig’s Eye” Parrant  in 1838.

The area then became known as “Pig’s Eye” until 1841, when a Roman Catholic missionary named Lucien Galtier built a chapel dedicated to the apostle St Paul. The city was declared Minnesota’s capital in 1858.

The city was initially known for producing fur and livestock. However, these industries soon declined and were replaced by other ones, such as automobiles, technology, and food processing.

The city center is known for its historical buildings, such as Alexander Ramsay House, James J Hill House, and the home of Minnesota’s first governor Henry Sibley.

Author Mark Twain once declared ”St. Paul is a wonderful town. It is put together in solid blocks of honest brick and stone, and has the air of intending to stay”.
