About Eau Claire 

 

Settlers began arriving in the area in the late 17th century. Early on, timber was harvested and logging was the major indurying during the late 1800s. Like the nearby towns, many sawmills were built, which made Eau Claire an industrial city by the late 19th century.  The city even got the nickname “Sawdust City.” 

 

By the 1850s, Eau Claire’s population grew to about 100. People who came were mostly interested in working at the saw mills. 

 

The University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire was founded in 1916. This marked a turn in the economy from lumber to rubber, tires, and education. 

 

Eau Claire got its name from Eau Claire County. “Eau Claire” is the singular form of “Eaux Claires,” a French name meaning “Clear Waters,” for the Eau Claire River. 

 

Local legend says the river was so named because early French explorers traveled down the Chippewa River, which was muddy and found the Eau Claire River and shouted “Voici l’eau claire!” or “Here is the clear water!” This is now the city’s motto. 

 

As of 2019, there are over 68,000 people that call Eau Claire home. The art culture is prominent in the city today.
