Cannabis may have tangible positive effects on those suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, according to a new study.
The findings, which were researched at Washington State University and will be published in the September edition Journal of Affective Disorders, found medical cannabis has effective short term possibilities in treating the symptoms of PTSD.
In a country where the mental health of the general population has drawn repeat attention in the press and where military veterans especially suffer from PTSD and suicide, any advances is natural treatments for such conditions is a major news item.
This is especially true for plant-based, natural and organic alternative treatments to harmful pharmaceuticals with mood-altering properties and a litany of harmful side effects.
“Cannabis provides temporary relief from PTSD-related symptoms. However, it may not be an effective long-term remedy as baseline symptoms were maintained over time and dose used for anxiety increased over time, which is indicative of development of tolerance,” study authors wrote.
WSU psychology researchers used the app Strainprint to collect self-reported results from over 400 medical marijuana users who claim to suffer from PTSD in order to zero in on which marijuana strains result in which changes to symptoms.
Participants claimed cannabis ameliorated their anxiety, irritability and flashbacks.
The study was one of the first of its kind with regard to the use of medical marijuana, so the effects of other cannabis products like hemp and CBD are unclear from the results.
Still, industrial hemp and CBD is legal in all 50 states and people use it for many of the benefits of marijuana without the intoxicating side effects, so one might hope these same PTSD upsides carry over perfectly.
Unfortunately, more research will need to be done before any of those hopes can be confirmed or denied. There is currently no proof that it is the case.
That doesn’t mean all hope is lost, and CBD has rapidly grown more popular since its 2018 legalization. Hemp and CBD fans will just need to wait as more and more studies collect.
CBD is, however, much beloved by its users for chronic pain, anxiety, insomnia and other conditions.
Studies have shown its preliminary potential for use fighting inflammation and anxiety, but mostly glowing testimonials show the promise of the products.
