With the support of a prominent interest group, those with arthritis may see relief around the corner.
The Arthritis Foundation, a major advocacy and information hub for those who suffer from rheumatoid and other forms of arthritis problems, recently published a set of guidelines for those interested in using CBD to ease their joint pain.
Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a relative of marijuana, but unlike that cannabis derivative it offers relaxation and other benefits without the mind-altering high.
The move by the Arthritis Foundation is in many ways a first for those suffering from the condition, as it addresses CBD openly and honestly in a way many advocacy groups haven’t adopted.
From the Arthritis Foundation mission statement: “Our goal is to chart a winning course, guiding families in developing personalized plans for living a full life – and making each day another stride towards a cure. We also publish Arthritis Today, the award-winning magazine that reaches 4.2 million readers.”
"It was important to acknowledge the public's interest, and put out some guidelines on the state of the science," Kevin Boehnke, a research investigator at the University of Michigan who helped write the foundation’s guidelines, told NBC News.
According to that story, over 54 million Americans have some form of arthritis.
From NBC News: “The Arthritis Foundation surveyed more than 2,600 patients, finding that nearly 80 percent are either currently using CBD, have used it, or are considering it for their joint pain.”
Still, the description of CBD use and science doesn’t pull its punches in the Arthritis Foundation’s release. The tale it tells is blunt about the fledgling status of CBD research, but the important points also get mentioned.
“There are no established clinical guidelines to inform usage. Experts recommend starting with a low dose, and if relief is inadequate, increase in small increments weekly,” the release said. “Buy from a reputable company that has each batch tested for purity, potency and safety by an independent laboratory and provides a certificate of analysis.”
