Ben & Jerry’s announces hopes to release CBD flavors after regulations are lifted

Prominent brands and celebrity figures have been joining in on the CBD trend all year since the Farm Bill of 2018 legalized hemp, and the newest among them is ice cream icon Ben & Jerry’s.

In a recent press release, the Vermont company explained that they have high hopes to craft a brand new recipe with cannabidiol as soon as the FDA will allow. CBD has garnished the attention of everyone from Walmart to Kim Kardashian, and it’s no surprise given how many normal people seek the non-psychoactive hemp derivative for their anxiety, chronic pain, and a slew of other problems.

“We are committed to bringing CBD-infused ice cream to your freezer as soon as it’s legalized at the federal level,” the Ben & Jerry’s press release from Thursday said. [1]

Under the federal regulatory structure that has developed since the hemp legalization in December, the Food and Drug Administration asserted that it would enforce bans against CBD in food and drink products.

Still, changes may eventually come to the FDA’s rules on CBD based on movements within the agency this week. The FDA is hosting its first public hearing on the status of CBD regulation Friday, with comments and testimony from 140 CBD business owners, users and other people with input.

Pending all those moves at the federal government, Ben & Jerry’s is going to move forward with a tasty ice cream flavor that includes CBD. But for a company known for whacky recipes, what can customers expect of one made with hemp or CBD?

“We’re doing this for our fans,” said Ben & Jerry’s CEO Matthew McCarthy in Thursday’s press release. “We’ve listened and brought them everything from Non-Dairy indulgences to on-the-go portions with our Pint Slices. We aspire to love our fans more than they love us and we want to give them what they’re looking for in a fun, Ben & Jerry’s way.” [1]

The release goes on to say that the hemp and CBD extracts that the company will use for their new prospective ice cream will be sustainably sourced from Vermont farmers. [1]
