Multiple sources are reporting that the U.S. Congress may soon hold a vote on a bill that would decriminalize marijuana use and possession.
The bill, called the Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act, or the MORE Act, was introduced by House Judicial Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), according to reporting from the Boston Globe and Marijuana Moment. [1]
If passed by the House, the measure would be an immense step forward for legal cannabis products in the U.S., though only a step in the process. Committee members are expected to offer initial feedback on a draft of the bill Wednesday. [1]
According to Forbes, the MORE Act would remove marijuana from the list of scheduled drugs under the Controlled Substances Act. [2]
Marijuana is currently a Schedule 1 controlled substance, along with heroin, cocaine and other narcotics that have the capability to do far more harm than it can.
In addition to rescheduling the drug, the bill would also expunge criminal records of those charged with marijuana crimes in the past. [1]
“For too long, our federal cannabis policies have been rooted in the past,” co-chair of the Congressional Cannabis Caucus Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) told Marijuana Moment. [1]
The bill would also dedicate “reinvestments in communities most impacted by the war on drugs.” [1]
Sen. Kamala Harris, a 2020 presidential candidate for the Democratic Party, is sponsoring a Senate version, Forbes said. The MORE Act now has 55 cosponsors.
USA Today reports that Joe Biden is currently the only 2020 Democratic Party candidate who doesn’t support full-on legalization, and he recently drew flak for calling it a “gateway drug.” [3]
“It's a debate. Before I legalize it nationally, I want to make sure we know a lot more about the science behind it,” Biden told USA Today. [3]
