This summer, try fighting the sun with CBD

The summer is in full swing, and with the Fourth of July around the corner, many have already faced the damaging, painful results of sun burn.

CBD, a cannabis compound derived from industrial hemp and a non-intoxicating relative of THC, has become a popular source of relief for many people’s pain symptoms and inflammation caused by many problems, including sun burn.

Americans use CBD and hemp for a number of uses, including chronic pain, inflammation and arthritis, among others.

No one likes the sting and heated skin from a bad burn after a hot day, but some have found relief in the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD.

Though clinical studies and other research is sadly scarce when it comes to hard evidence of these properties, initial findings have been seen since around 2012 and more recent studies have slowly accumulated since industrial hemp was legalized.

“Our findings demonstrate that the transdermal application of CBD oil can achieve significant improvement in pain and other disturbing sensations in patients with peripheral neuropathy,” said the conclusion of one 2020 study at the National Institutes of Health. “The treatment product was well tolerated and may provide a more effective alternative compared to other current therapies in the treatment of peripheral neuropathy.”

With luck, findings like those are only the start of the story, and meanwhile more and more people use CBD everyday and share their contentment at the results in consumer reviews and testimonials.

“More research needs to be done but it is promising,” Dermatologist Joyce Fox of UCLA told Vice writer Rajul Punjabi. “There have been [CBD products] that are recommended—not specifically necessarily for sunburn—but just as an anti-inflammatory.”

Punjabi compares the effects of the CBD skin lotion to aloe vera, a common home-remedy for scorching sun burn.

The hydrating effects of aloe are highly desirable, but the inflammation help many find in CBD is another thing to consider. CBD oil paired with healthy amounts of water consumption are one way some people choose to replace or supplement home remedies like aloe.
