FAQ
Tincture is a term for a concentrated herbal extract created by soaking certain herbs in liquid over a span of weeks. The soaking process infuses the liquid with key chemicals from the herb, and after the solids are strained out, the result is both concentrated and ingestible. CBD tinctures are created by extracting cannabidiol from its parent plant using either ethanol or carbon dioxide. Once extracted, it's suspended in a carrier oil such as hemp seed, coconut, or olive oil.
There are two methods for administering a CBD oil tincture. After squeezing it into the dropper, you can rub it directly on your skin — the topical application method preferred for trying to address arthritis, joint pain, or muscle soreness — or drop it under your tongue. Plenty of flavored tinctures are available on the market, and it's also possible to mix the tincture into favorite foods or drinks. While there are no official dosage guidelines for CBD products, most medical professionals advise starting with products of a lower strength at dosages of no more than a milliliter (usually the equivalent of a full dropper). Dosages can be increased as needed in consultation with your physician.
A CBD oil is produced by blending a CBD extract with an inert carrier oil. A tincture involves a CBD extract created using alcohol or carbon dioxide, a manufacturing process that involves extensive refinement and processing. CBD oil tinctures combine a tincture's method of extracting CBD with the use of a carrier oil. Other tinctures can be made without the use of oils.
Broad-spectrum CBD contains other components of the cannabis plant, but it's free from THC. Full-spectrum CBD tinctures, by contrast, contain other cannabis plant components that include trace amounts of THC (federally legal full-spectrum CBD products have THC levels not in excess of 0.3%). Your sensitivity to the THC in a full-spectrum CBD oil is likely to be a determining factor in whether it's for you. It's also possible to find CBD isolates that contain only cannabidiol, with no other cannabis compounds.
