Can CBD really treat cancer? Just how much should prospective customers trust some of the wilder claims about the powers of this new, highly popular substance?
The truth of the matter is that far too little science supports an unequivocal statement on the benefits fo CBD for easing cancer problems in particular, but testimonials and some preliminary studies seem to suggest it can help ameliorate complications and complaints that come from cancer treatments.
According to Yahoo! News, studies at the National Cancer Institute have shown CBD and cannabis generally may have some impact on cancer growth and recurrence rates, slowing the disease’s spread in limited animal trials.
The NCI said in a statement that cannabis and its derivatives have been used as naturalistic health additives and cures to common maladies, and cannabis has only been made illegal in the U.S. relatively recently.
A study published at the Journal of the American Medical Association’s Oncology publication shows medical marijuana may have uses for “refractory cancer pains and as an anti-tumor agent.”
Medical marijuana uses for cancer side effects and other considerations like pain are far more founded than studies of CBD, which has more recently (as of 2018) reentered the popular scene. Cancer patients were one of the key drivers of the legalized medical marijuana movement in many states.
Still, the explosion of CBD products has shown that there is a large portion of people who want the benefits of marijuana without the mind-altering high associated with it.
If CBD’s benefits can mirror those of the slightly more tested marijuana, it has real promise.
The American Cancer Society is ambivalent on cannabis use, but says patients shouldn’t use it alone, a seemingly obvious caveat.
“Medical decisions about pain and symptom management should be made between the patient and his or her doctor, balancing evidence of benefit and harm to the patient, the patient’s preferences and values, and any laws and regulations that may apply,” the ACS said in a statement.
Almost all involved in the study of CBD’s effects on cancer treatment agree more study is needed, and findings and hopeful signs are preliminary. So many purveyors of cannabis products have made claims about its use for such tasks that the Federal Trade Commission recently issued guidance against making outlandish claims.
