Food and Drug Administration issues warnings on some CBD products

Americans interested in CBD have waited with bated breath for more word from the Food and Drug Administration after working groups discussed the cannabis compound this spring.

The U.S. Dept. of Agriculture was forthcoming with guidelines that seemed promising for the substance, encouraging states not to interfere with its interstate shipment and laying out the procedures for growing industrial hemp. Most recently, the FDA has claimed a short list of CBD brands and products may cause health problems.

The FDA compilation mentions Infinite CBD, Daddy Burt Hemp and Whole Leaf Organics as CBD companies that made inappropriate claims or that sell potentially harmful products, along with others. [1]

Interestingly, the World Health Organization directly contradicted the FDA’s warning this year when it published reports claiming CBD should not be scheduled as a dangerous substance because it carries no health risks. [3]

According to U.S. News and World Report, the FDA warning centered on companies that were making false or outlandish claims that CBD is a cure-all.

“The FDA is concerned that people may mistakenly believe that trying CBD ‘can't hurt,’” the agency said, according to U.S. News and World Report. “The agency wants to be clear that we have seen only limited data about CBD's safety and these data point to real risks that need to be considered.” [1]

How the FDA plans to square its seemingly hysterical and possibly warnings with the stances of the WHO and the USDA will certainly be an interesting news item to watch in coming months, but what can’t be denied is CBD’s presence in American life.

In the past year, the newly popular CBD has been used by people all over the country and the world for their insomnia, anxiety, chronic pain and inflammation. The FDA has even approved a CBD-based prescription for types of epilepsy.

Once thing is certain: CBD isn’t going anywhere, and Americans need a CBD source they can trust.
