Oregon State secures $2.5 million for hemp research center

This year, Oregon State University will take advantage of a $2.5 million federal appropriation to create a new research endeavor to better understand hemp science.

In any area of agricultural expertise, millions of dollars fall on questions of science. If yields can be improved even the slightest bit, some can hit the market in a huge way. Genetically-modified crops max out versatility and yields. For hemp, this type of science is just beginning.

According to the Corvallis Gazette-Times, U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley announced this month that OSU would receive $2.5 in federal funding to study the cultivation of industrial hemp and its properties at the school’s Global Hemp Information Center. [1]

“We were pleased to see the appropriation get approved as it shows the federal government’s confidence in our work,” Alan Sams, OSU’s dean of Agricultural Sciences, told the Gazette-Times. [1]

Cannabis is one of the most versatile plants on earth. It’s well-known for its uses in marijuana, but non-intoxicating CBD products have flooded consumer markets of late and hemp has been used for centuries in textiles and shipbuilding.

Thousands now use CBD for their anxiety, insomnia, chronic pain and a load of other common issues. Some use it to relax. There’s even a CBD prescription drug, Epidiolex, which treats a rare form of childhood epilepsy.

OSU’s Global Hemp Information Center also recently a $1 million gift from OSU grads Seth and Eric Crawford last September, the Gazette-Times said. [1]

The Crawfords founded a hemp-seed research company, Oregon CBD.

Oregon’s pedigree in cannabis is renowned. Some of the leading hemp and marijuana brands started on the West Coast as both substances have grown more accepted by the laws of American states.

Among these industry leaders is Siskiyou Sungrown Organic CBD, the national house brand of Nothing But Hemp.

Siskiyou focuses on a farm-to-table approach to its cannabis products. In particular, its CBD oil tinctures, balms and treats are award-winning organic approaches to popular items within the emerging hemp market.
