The world of trashy, unproven CBD companies is like a box of chocolates: You never know when someone will manufacture your false praise to sell their products.
Recently, an unknown hemp company manufactured ads with Tom Hanks’ likeness to promote a CBD brand called “CannaPro CBD.” The “Cast Away” and “Forrest Gump” star actor rebuked the posts on Instagram and in interviews, claiming he never endorsed the product.
According to ABC News, the advertisement claimed Hanks said: “The advances Dr. Oz has made in the CBD industry are remarkable. I wouldn’t believe it if I hadn’t had the chance to try it out for myself. After using CannaPro CBD for two weeks I was already feeling like a new me.” [1]
Tom Hanks made an Instagram post to respond to the bogus ad, ABC News reports. "I’ve never said this and would never make such an endorsement. Come on, man!” [1]
Dr. Mehmet Oz, a television personality who was also targeted in the false advertisement, came forward to denounce the use of his name in a similar fashion.
Dr. Oz tweeted in response to the dust-up, “Could not agree more with @tomhanks. This is a fake and misleading advertisement intended to take advantage of consumers using false claims and our likenesses illegally,” People Magazine reports. [3]
Just because Hanks wasn’t a fan of the phony hemp company doesn’t mean other celebrities feel the same.
Snoop Dogg and Martha Stewart announced plans to work on a CBD company in early 2019, while Willie Nelson’s new brand Willie’s Remedy rolled out a coffee product and other CBD offerings last year.
Star power hasn’t ended with recording artists and TV personalities. In recent months, professional sports leagues included Major League Baseball and the National Football League have at least held discussions of whether to test players for the substance after former New England Patriots star Rob Gronkowski and others became proponents of CBD.
CBD is used for a variety of problems, like anxiety, chronic pain, stress and insomnia.
Finding the best CBD can be difficult, especially with sleazy opportunists like those who framed Tom Hanks.
