CBD Vapes may contain illicit, dangerous components: Buy smart!

Reports this week shed new light on the recent explosion of concern over possibly dangerous vape products.

It seems the over 500 cases of illness from vaping seem to come from bootleg versions of the products with illegal synthetic versions of marijuana in them. Reports seem to indicate these harmful additives have appeared in CBD and marijuana vape products alike.

The Associated Press reported Monday that testings of 30 samples of CBD found cheap, illegal synthetic K2 in them. [1]

K2 was found in the vape that put Jay Jenkins into a coma, according to the AP.

Cases of others becoming sick and injured from these dangerous combinations have reached as high as 530 over the past two years.

“At least 128 samples out of more than 350 tested by government labs in nine states, nearly all in the South, had synthetic marijuana in products marketed as CBD,” the AP reported. “Gummy bears and other edibles accounted for 36 of the hits, while nearly all others were vape products.” [1]

Potential bans and other highly-strict regulations proposed by some legislators may seem like the right answer in the face of such unfortunate events, but there are aspects of prohibitions that are unexpected.

The brands that were found laced with K2 were largely knock-off or bootleg pods for JUUL vapes and other products. People make bootleg vape fluid because the name brand is too pricey.

Banning or regulating vape juice, meanwhile, would only increase the prices and spike demand and desperation, with fewer controls on bootleg quality than even exist now.

“People have started to see the market grow and there are some fly-by-night companies trying to make a quick buck,” Marielle Weintraub of the U.S. Hemp Association told the AP. [1] [2]

These new CBD revelations don’t reflect on the high-end products within the market. Almost uniformly the problem arose from cheap, seedy, under-the-table manufacturers.

This means that to be a smart consumer of CBD is to be discerning and knowledgeable about products and quality.
