New findings show CBD may work so well because it crosses the brain-body barrier

The common uses of CBD are well known, and have ever-increasing numbers of interested customers seeking the hemp derivative for pain, anxiety, insomnia and epilepsy relief.

Marijuana has THC as its active ingredient, which makes its users high and is clearly psychoactive. CBD doesn’t come with these traits, but new scientific results and analysis shows that doesn’t mean the cannabinoid doesn’t have a complex relationship with brain health and chemistry.

In a recent article, Dr. Joseph Mercola catalogues a number of scientific developments around the medical marijuana and CBD products that have been studied in recent years since states and federal bodies started to allow research into their use. [1]

Mercola’s analysis is an interesting one because it brings to light aspects of CBD that have gone under-appreciated. The main thrust centers on how the membrane between the body and the brain is an observable trait of human anatomy that keeps certain injection or ingestion medications from reaching the nervous system, especially the brain and spinal cord. [1]

This ‘brain barrier,’ according to the new report, has stumped some in the medical field for as long as 100 years, since it was discovered.

However, in two research studies, pills coated with medical marijuana strains and CBD were able to more effectively transmit the medicine to their intended target in the patients’ brains. [1]

The studies were reported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse as having shown the preliminary hope to use CBD and other approved medical marijuana methods to ease the use of brain medicines, according to Mercola. [2]

The analysis shows how CBD in a medical guise could be used to soften the brain barrier’s natural resistance to outside treatment, acting as a sort of Trojan Horse for bringing in the healing powers of brain and nervous system medications.

Like so much in the cannabidiol and medical marijuana research sphere, it is clear that these are the hopeful uses of the substance based on rather preliminary research. As with other claims about CBD and its uses, much more scientific research and investment lies between the current state of affairs and absolute certainty about CBD’s medical use.

Still, aspects of people’s CBD use show that the scientific uses may have some basis. Plenty of people seek out CBD products for mental and psychological issues, which seems to grant a certain amount of credibility to the brain-barrier thesis Mercola is hinting at.

Anxiety, insomnia, depression and epilepsy are all forms of mental concerns that people use CBD to relieve. Many testimonials point towards its effectiveness, and you can read all about CBD’s uses and impacts on the endocannabinoid system on the Nothing But Hemp blog. [3]
